Invitation Paragraph
We are asking every family attending the AI Literacy workshop to contribute to a research project that aims to better understand how parents and children learn about AI together.
Before you decide if you want to help, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what taking part involves.
Our goal is to improve how families explore AI in a supportive, enaging and enjoyable way. Participation is voluntary.
Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with your family. Please ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.
What is the purpose of this study?
OurKidsCode is developing a new family-based workshop to help parents and primary aged children learn about artificial intelligence (AI) together.
AI is becoming increasingly present in everyday life, and many parents and children have questions about what AI is, how it works, and how to use it safely and responsibly. This study aims to explore how a family learning approach can help parents and primary-aged children build understanding confidence and critical awareness around AI.
To do this, we will gather feedback from families before, during, and after the workshop. This information will help us design enjoyable, accessible, and effective AI learning experiences for families across Ireland.
Participation is not a test. All information collected is used only to understand how families experience the workshop and how we can make future workshops better.
Do I have to take part?
No. This is voluntary. Even if you decide to take part now, you are still free to change your mind at any time and without giving a reason. You can also decide to skip any questions you like.
What will happen to me if I take part?
If your family chooses to participate, you may be invited to take part in several activities that help us understand your experiences with AI and the workshop
Before the workshop
- You will complete a short online pre-workshop survey about your family’s current familiarity with AI tools and your expectations for the workshop.
- Some families may also be invited to a short online interview (up to 30 minutes) so we can better understand what you hope to learn.
During the workshop
- You will attend the workshop
- Researchers may observe the session to understand how families interact with the activities. This is not an assessment.
After the workshop
A small number of families may be asked to take part in a post-workshop focus group where parents and children can share their reflections. This session will be audio-recorded so we can accurately capture your feedback.
You will be invited to complete a post-workshop survey about your experience and any changes in understanding or confidence with AI.
What are the benefits of taking part?
Taking part in this study may benefit your family in several ways:
Your participation will help OurKidsCode develop high-quality, research-informed AI literacy workshops that are accessible, engaging, and relevant for families across Ireland.
Parents may gain a clearer understanding of AI concepts and feel more confident supporting their children using AI tools safely and responsibly.
Children may develop curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking about how technology works in their everyday lives.
Keeping you and your data safe
Our team are Garda vetted which means we are approved to work with families and children.
Your privacy is important to us. Apart from the registration data, which we need to organise the workshops, any information we collect from you will be anonymised as soon as possible so that it cannot be linked to you, your family, or your location and so that you or your family members cannot be identified.
We will store personal information on secure password-protected servers at Trinity College for up to 7 years. Only the project team will have access to it. No hard copies of the data will be stored.
Your contact details will not be shared with anyone outside the project team. We will never share the audio files with any third parties. If you decide to withdraw from the workshops, you may request that we delete your contact details.
Once the rest of your data has been anonymised, it is not possible to remove it. If you are at all worried about how your data is kept, please get in touch and we can answer your questions.
It is very unlikely, but if we become aware of anything that may put a child at risk, we are legally required to report it to the appropriate authorities to ensure the child’s safety.
What will happen to the results of this research?
There may be media reporting, lectures, conference presentations and academic publications written as a result of this project, however you and your family will not be identified.
What do I do if I have any further questions?
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your participation, please contact our project team at contact@ourkidscode.ie. They will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Thank you!
